Instructing Hatha Yoga Overview

Yoga is one of the fastest-growing fitness activities worldwide, and qualified yoga instructors are in high demand. Instructing Hatha Yoga describes the qualities and knowledge yoga instructors need in order to be competent and effective teachers. It covers all aspects of successful instruction:

-Detailed descriptions on how to teach 69 yoga asanas (postures), with more than 300 photos showing the postures

-Verbal and visual cues to use in teaching each posture

-Specific hands-on adjustments to help students achieve the desired posture

-Modifications for each posture and effective ways to work with students of different abilities in the same class

-Charts that identify body-segment kinematics and muscles used in individual postures

-A DVD that shows how to achieve the most accurate positions for a sampling of postures and the hands-on adjustments instructors can make to assist students

Two features in particular set this book apart: simple yet comprehensive cues that teachers can use to bring students into proper alignment and deeper mental focus, and detailed instructions on making safe hands-on adjustments and modifications for students. Authors Kathy Lee Kappmeier and Diane Ambrosini, with more than 20 years of experience in yoga instruction and teacher training, provide a class overview, outlines, lesson plans, and sample syllabi. They present ways to structure a class with flexible teaching plans in a variety of settings, such as schools, community centers, fitness clubs, and wellness centers. With their backgrounds in physical education, kinesiology, biomechanics, and various sectors of the fitness industry, the authors not only understand the art and science of yoga, but they know how to teach it safely and effectively.

The authors also equip readers with the following information:

-The most popular styles of yoga and how the styles evolved

-A questionnaire that helps instructors evaluate their readiness to begin teaching yoga

-Modifications for each posture and effective ways to work with students of different abilities in the same class

-Study questions and answers that review topics presented in part I of the book

-The importance of pranayama (breath work) and how to teach basic techniques

-The physical and energetic anatomy applied in the postures

-The valued and effective qualities of a yoga teacher, in line with the standards set by the Yoga Alliance Registry

Part I focuses readers on understanding yoga, on knowing themselves and their students, and on creating a class environment. It also explores breathing techniques and provides an overview of energy and anatomical considerations inherent to yoga. Part II describes the postures and their adjustments and modifications. Among these postures are sun salutations, standing postures, seated postures, supine and prone postures, inverted postures, and restorative postures. Part III lays out the practical aspects of structuring classes. The appendixes include reproducible forms for instructors, sample relaxation scripts, a listing of yoga resources for instructors, and answers to study questions covering part I.

Developed in line with the standards of the Yoga Alliance and its national Yoga Teachers' Registry, Instructing Hatha Yoga helps instructors develop the attributes they need in order to be qualified teachers who facilitate students' learning and awareness in the practice of yoga.

Meditation originated from Asian religious practices, in India, China and Japan. There is no definite date recorded, but it is rooted back to old times with techniques dating from over 5000 years ago, even dated back in the Bible with Moses. Its purpose was for religious believes and the health factors that come with it.

Buddha was the first to make an icon in meditation, around 500 B.C. Then the Easter-styles of meditation expanded; Buddhist, Hinduism even Christianity. They still custom strongly to this day. It didn't become beloved in the West till the 1960's and 1970's. That's when it vastly extensive into many different forms as we know of them today.

Yoga rehearsal

In these health aware times where we are all too aware of the significance of keeping fit, taking excess weight off and production sure our bodies are strong and flexible Yoga is often a good option to perform these things. As a matter of fact there is exiguous to beat it in terms of helping our bodies gain strength, keep a teenage bounce in the step and combat stress. Some of the more diplomatic forms of Yoga such as corrective Yoga or Yin Yoga tend not to combine a cardio-vascular workout in the routines but many other styles of yoga give good workouts over the whole range of body fitness.

However there is another side to Yoga which may petition to distinct people, or it may attract habitancy who want to keep fit but in a more thoughtful way than doing 'just a workout.' Yoga was devised by philosophers and monks who wanted to caress the ultimate in self realisation. They would sit for hours in mediation and contemplation, seeking that moment of enlightenment as they associated with a Universal source of power or Goodness. In order to get ready their bodies for such a demanding yet passive operation they found that by doing sequences of postures regularly they could get their bodies into astounding health to stay mobile and salutary whilst they meditated. They combined this with breathing practices which helped their lungs and heart - as well as helping them change their state of consciousness.

Hatha Yoga

This background gives a rich history and depth to the institution of yoga and for habitancy who would like to deepen their own self insight and have greater awareness and more operate over their unruly and often unhelpful mental patterns yoga offers this too. This aspect of yoga is often left out of daily classes where fitness is the goal, although remnant of it remain in some breathing exercises and the all-important final relaxation. Remember next time you do a yoga class that that time at the end where you let go of tension and feel the power and relief in your body after it has worked straight through all those postures is As a matter of fact to help you know yourself better. There is definitely a lot more to Yoga than we first realise.

For an idea of what they are, the Five Tibetan Rites is a law of exercises reported to be more than 2,500 years old which were first publicized by Peter Kelder in a 1939 publication entitled The Eye of Revelation.

Furthermore, The Rites are said to be a form of Tibetan yoga similar to the more well-known yoga series that originated in India

Now, the same law that I outlined for a yoga practice
(ventilation, clothing, focus etc) do still apply here.

I have practiced these exercises on occasions and found them to be satisfactory adequate for an alternative, hence the suspect why I am presenting them to you now.

So here we go:

The Five Tibetan Rites

Remember the following when doing the Tibetan rites.

1. The maximum number of repetitions for any rehearsal is 21.

2. The minimum is 3, (However for rite #1, I will say 1 cycle is fine, you will see why upon reading up on it)

3. The law of a counter or saving pose still applies to each rite. (Hence the suspect why it is presented as a Yogic alternative to Hatha Yoga. (Remember, The Rites are more Vinyasa style of yoga if anything)

4. Use a "yoga" mat Not the bare floor or carpet!

1. Rite 1
Stand erect with arms outstretched, horizontal to the floor.
Spin nearby clockwise (you must turn from left to right) until you come to be slightly dizzy.

Personally, even though I have seen habitancy on youtube do the spins in effect fast (think of a ballet dancer doing pirouettes) I think whoever is just starting out with the yogic 5 Tibetan rites should take it slow.

With the arms outstretched, keep the focus of the eye on the right palm (this facing up) and the left facing the floor, then turn ever so slowly, about a step per second.

I mean, I just don't want you to get dizzy cause the first time I did the rites, boy, being dizzy was not that great a feeling. So I had to find an alternative, did some explore and came up with the afore-mentioned points in the former paragraphs.

Gradually increase practicing from 3 up to 21 repetitions per day for each rite.

Counter Pose/Recovery Pose to Rite #1

I have found that standing in the mountain pose (like the one I prescribed as the counter pose to the headstand) for a few breaths, seeing right ahead (with eyes closed), with the palms of the hands moderately pressing the back of the thighs, helps to alleviate the momentary dizziness that is created, by the first rite.

Moreover, since you are going to be starting the next right from a laying down position, you can go ahead and engage in the Yoga corpse pose for about a 2-3 minutes. (Remember the quadrate Breathing mechanism folks)

==

Rite 2

After you have engaged in the saving pose from rite number 1, we shall now go on to rite #2.

For this one, First lie flat on the floor, face up.

Fully extend your arms along your sides, and place the palms of your hands against the floor.

Then, raise your head off the floor, any way as you do this lift your legs, knees straight, into a vertical position.

Hey, wait a minute, I'm doing crunches Foras?

Yes, you are my friend, at least something quite similar, but don't get to excited now, remember the following for this rite:

1. Before you begin the rite, empty the lungs then take a deep breath for about 3 seconds, then when the legs are lifted, exhale for 3 seconds.

2. Stop at the 21st repetition (as with all rites)

Counter Pose/Recovery Pose to Rite #2

A easy 2-3 minutes corpse pose will suffice for this.
Just remember to exit on the right as described in my former articles.

Rite 3

Now to learn the third rite.

Kneel on the floor with the body erect.

Try to keep the hands placed against the thigh muscles.

Now, place the chin against the Chest like the yoga chin lock I discussed in the shoulder stand and prayayama articles

Empty the lungs.

Now Inhale and throw the head and neck backward, arching the spine.

As you arch, you will brace your arms and hands against the lower end of the buttocks.

After the arching, return to the traditional position, and start the rite all over again.

Breathe in deeply as you arch the spine, breathe out as you return to an erect position

Counter Pose/Recovery Pose to Rite #3

The Child's Pose that preceded (and comes after-as the case may be-)the Headstand previously discussed.

Rite 4

Folks, this single rehearsal is going to look like you are performing push-ups in reverse.

Instead of intriguing to-and-from the ground floor.

Sit down on the floor with your legs right out in front of you and your feet about 12 inches apart.

With your upper body erect, place the palms of your hands on the floor alongside the buttocks.

Now apply the same chin lock you did in rite #3, then drop the head backward as far as it will go.

At the same time, raise your body so that the knees bend while the arms remain straight.

The trunk of the body will be in a right line with the upper legs, horizontal to the floor.

Then, tense every muscle in the body.

Now, relax your muscles as you return to the traditional sitting position, and rest before repeating the procedure.

The breathing pattern is as your body is stretched out (head going back), inhale, as you return to the sitting position, exhale.

Counter Pose/Recovery Pose to Rite #4

A easy 2-3 slight corpse pose will suffice.

Rite 5

Folks, this is my personal favorite.

Why?

Well, for a guy, doing push-ups is always a "man-thing" that boosts your testosterone, moreover, it is a reminder of the 'downward facing dog' and 'upward facing dog/cobra' poses in yoga (namely the afore-mentioned sun exercises) and Hindu-Push ups which are soon to be discussed.

In fact the differentiating motions between the Hindu Push-ups and the fifth rite are simply

1. Your feet are as wide as possible in Hindu Push ups, while in the fifth rite they are about as wide as the mat you should be using.

2. In hindu push-ups, there is a pushing/flowing motion that involves your arms, whereas in the 5th rite, it's more in the hips.

Needless to say, both increase your sex drive and durability and I don't need to construe why after you have tried them!

When you perform the fifth rite, your body will be face-down to the floor. It will be supported by the hands, palms down against the floor, and the toes in a flexed position.

Throughout this rite, the hands and feet should be kept straight.

Now, Raise the Body Into an inverted "V",(think of the afore-mentioned downward facing-dog), then lower into an upward facing dog/cobra pose.

Now for the prescribed breathing pattern, when you are inverted, exhale, when you are seeing towards the ceiling, inhale. 3 seconds each way.

Counter Pose/Recovery Pose to Rite #5

Some schools of idea say you should do a child's pose then a final corpse pose fully covered, while some say go right to a corpse pose and even still some don't even prescribe any saving poses.

However, from my own experiences, a easy corpse pose at the end will suffice.

Well, there are some other additions to the 5 rites, as a matter of fact, it is exactly what Uddiyana Bandha (the Yogic Abdominal Lift) mentioned in my former articles looks like.

You can reference the 6th rite on your own on google, or refer to my record on the Yogic abdominal rehearsal or you can, like I chose to, play it safe and plainly stick with the five provided.

So, there you have it folks; all the helpful information needed on the 5 tibetan rites of rejuvenation as culled from Vinyasa Yoga.

Bikram Yoga - Is it dangerous Or Not?

Well, you might have a dinky doubt if doing Yoga can harm your body. You might ask if it is for real dangerous. A lot of people have dissimilar opinions about this issue. Apparently, Yoga fanatics will definitely take no for an answer. But, there are other individuals who started to feel back aches and other muscle cramps.

Medical experts and physical therapists have also their side on this. According to them, since this activity is done in a heated room there can be some side effects to the human body. As we all know, heat increases the flexibility of the muscles, but stretching the muscles should only fall in the middle of the normal percentage of its resting length. Beyond that, it is already considered unhealthy, it can damage the muscles.

Hatha Yoga

It was found that excessive eagerness and competition among the students can cause injuries. This is because they are much enthusiastic to achieve the postures and show their best to other students. There are instances that you tend to forget your limits whenever you are in the mood for exhibiting what you can do.

Whenever you attend your Hot Yoga class, you have to drink more than one glass of water. This is because you are staying in a room with high temperature; there is a tendency that you might get dehydrated. You will sweat a lot so you will loose more fluids in your body, so there is for real a need to replace them by drinking lots of water.

On a inevitable note, Bikram Yoga is not that bad after all. There can still be countless benefits that it can do to your body. It conditions you physically, mentally and spiritually. Once you start to join classes, you can gently see the results. However, you also have to possess the right kind of attitude. Even if you work hard on attending Bikram Yoga classes but still very pessimistic about it, you can never achieve anything. You are just wasting your time.

You do not have to worry about the bad experiences that you hear from your classmates or friends. Everyone has its own capabilities. Maybe their bodies have lower extremity when it comes to such kind of physical activity. Physical therapists say that it will all depend on the quality of the students, whether they can tolerate doing every posture or not. They just have to assess if their bodies can sustain the level of difficulty of every position. You do not have to push your limits to the top, try to do it gently until you can perfectly do it. Being impatient can lead you to severe injury.

Always bear in mind that performing Bikram Yoga teaches you to be disciplined and focus. Doing more is not a good habit. You have to do everything in moderation. This goes whenever you achieve any position in your Yoga class. Try not to overdo your stretching. You may not feel the bad ensue immediately, but you will if you continuously do it. Unknowingly, you are already leading yourself to a serious damage of your muscles. Remember, you are attending Bikram Yoga classes to stay fit and healthy. Make sure that it should not be the other way around.
